Colour Script tests
Without too much focus on character design I just set out to enjoy playing around with colour, texture and atmosphere and will hopefully start a process of roughing out lots of characters and styles... it's a start!
Click them to enlarge & see properly like.

And some more Sax ref, poses and styles from a bit of research (I didn't draw these).

Pixar's One Man Band
This was actually never one of my faves as Pixar shorts go, mainly as I wasn't overly keen on the styling, but it has some great examples of characters playing multiple instruments and is worth seeing again.

If you like the 50s De Phazz cover, you might like the opening titles to 'Catch Me If You Can', done by the guys at Nexus Productions. I love it, personally.
Also, check out the Simpson's spoof version:
And Disney's take on the style (well, kinda):

Summary!
Okay, the ball is rolling nicely now and we have some good ideas going into the hat. The Cubes animation's with Chris and will pass on to someone else... next week? ; )
The idea of animating a band is really taking shape, it works on a number of levels;
I'm going to start off with these links:
The muppets had a great band called Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem. Each character had real personality and individuality, many based on famous musicians. Their instruments and the way they played them were very much an extension of their character.
Regardless of the direction we take with style, this is a great formula. The more I've read tonight, the clearer it is to appreciate just how much effort went into investing a personality and soul in each character - there are links to band members below these images.
And a musical number...
The Band by Character.

The idea of animating a band is really taking shape, it works on a number of levels;
- No immediate need for a narrative / storyline
- Each of us could take ownership of a character
- Great collective goal; it's something that'd be hard to achieve individually.
- The focus can be almost entirely on character design and animation from the outset if we use an easy-rig system
